Dear Mr. Mihaildis: I am a Media Specialist at a high school in Cobb County, Georgia and an Education Specialist student in Media at the University of West Georgia. One of our current projects is to review a book pertinent to our research, write a review and submit it to an academic journal. I would like to submit the attached review of a book that I believe is relevant to the objectives of the JMLE. As an educator, I was especially pleased to read William B. Russell’s book, Teaching Social Issues with Film. It is often difficult for teachers to discuss social issues such as abortion, religion, gay rights, and immigration with students. Russell’s book presents an excellent method to address complex topics through the use of film. He divides the book into a filmography of 180 films within 30 subject areas and includes a brief synopsis with details about each film. One highlight of the book is Russell’s Model for Using Film, an effective tool for teachers as they guide students in purposeful viewing. Although the book is designed for incorporating film into Social Studies classes, every discipline can benefit from this resource. It will aid students in becoming critical thinkers and effective communicators, goals shared by the JMLE. This book will be in our school library and I believe that a review of the book would be helpful to other librarians and educators seeking to enhance their curriculum. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely,
Pat Auger, Media Specialist Harrison High School 4500 Due West Road Kennesaw, GA 30152 patricia.auger@cobbk12.org
